Champions League Recap

For the first time in 154 Champions League matches, soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo received a red card.

There were several intriguing matches across the first two days of UCL play, but no storyline was greater than when Ronaldo was reduced to tears after being sent off in what was a questionable decision.

Ronaldo’s Juventus side was forced to finish the final two-thirds of its game against Valencia with 10 men. Even at such a disadvantage, Juve was able to put away two penalty kicks from Miralem Pjanic and handle business.

The performances of the tournament so far came from Inter Milan and Liverpool. Inter trailed for 85 minutes against top-flight English club Tottenham until striker Mauro Icardi knotted the score at one. Then history repeated itself for the Tottenham Hotspurs as a combination of headers led the ball into the back of the net to complete the comeback win for Inter.

Liverpool, who fell to Real Madrid in last June’s Champions League final, competed against Paris Saint-Germain on day one, in what was must-see television. Liverpool led the match 2-0 after goals from Daniel Sturridge and a penalty kick from James Milner. It was all PSG for what remained of the 90 minutes. Thomas Meunier got one back for Paris in the 40th minute and in the 83rd minute, lightning struck. French teenage superstar Kylian Mbappe made his mark and tied the game at two. It wasn’t until the 91st minute (additional time) that this game was decided. Roberto Firmino, who was limited in practice due to an eye injury, came off the bench in relief of Mo Salah and scored the stunning winner.

England’s champion Manchester City was on the wrong side of a shocker in their group stage matchup with Lyon. City, who won the British Premier League with a record number of points in 2017-18, faltered for the first time in 2018-19 with a 2-1 defeat while still dominating possession.

The other club to call Manchester home, Manchester United would not be upset in such fashion, defeating Swiss club BSC Young Boys 3-0. Center midfielder Paul Pogba was able to contribute two goals for United.

American soccer star Christian Pulisic scored an 85th-minute winner for German club Borussia Dortmund on his 20th birthday.

Spain’s historic clubs Barcelona and current champion Real Madrid were both dominant winning 4-0 and 3-0. Ronaldo’s legendary counterpart Lionel Messi had a much more admirable day scoring three goals for Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid was able to hold off Monaco in the second half of their match after gathering a 2-1 lead in the last minute before halftime.

Other notable matches: Bayern Munich 2-0 Benfica, Schalke 04 1-1 FC Porto, Red Star Belgrade 0-0 Napoli, Ajax  Amsteram 3-0 AEK Athens, Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 TSG Hoffenheim, Viktoria Plzen 2-2 CSKA Moscow, Galatasaray 3-0 Lokomotiv Moscow.
