Men’s Soccer Loses Two At Peter Baldwin Classic

A weekend in Vermont led to a pair of losses that kept Central Connecticut’s men’s soccer winless on the season.

The team has struggled so far in 2018, dropping their home opener vs. Seton Hall and another at UMass Lowell.

On Friday night, the Blue Devils handed Saint Peter’s College their first victory of the season with a 2-1 defeat. Blue Devil’s freshman Noah Silverman scored the opening goal of the game in the last minute of the first half and sent his team into halftime with all of the momenta. The goal came from a deflection off of a corner kick and had CCSU with the lead.

Less than five minutes into the second half, the luck of the deflection was not in favor of the Blue Devils as a Saint Peter’s corner kick was knocked into their own net. Just like that, CCSU had unwound the lead that they stitched together. The self-inflicted wound may have decided the game, as the Peacocks put the winning goal into the back of the net in the tenth minute to follow.

SPC finished the game with a 15-14 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The loss was CCSU’s third in as many games this season.

Their fourth game of the season and second in three days would not be any easier.

At 5-1 on the season, with their only loss coming against Duke in overtime (who was ranked 10th in the nation), The University of Vermont Catamounts hosted a Sunday afternoon match that would prove CCSU’s toughest yet. UVM swiftly made the Blue Devils a victim of their four-game win streak with a 2-0 victory.

Vermont would complete both halves of the contest with more shots (seven and 14) than CCSU got off the entire time (five). Just one of their five shots was considered on target. And with only one corner kick attempted throughout, the Blue Devils had a hard time doing anything at all.

Without creating any repeatable success on offense the team was unable to gain momentum and effectively removed themselves from having a real chance to win the game.

The Catamounts scored the first in the seventh minute by a chip from inside the box by Geo Alves. The second goal by UVM didn’t come for another 77 minutes, but a failed clearance resulted in a 20-yard strike from Jon Arnar Barddal put the opposition on top for good.

The Blue Devils, now 0-4 on the year, will be hosted by the University of Massachusetts on September 15th. UMass will be the second stop on a six-game road trip that takes the calendar into October. The trip will include matches at Quinnipiac, Hartford, St. Francis Brooklyn (first game of NEC schedule) and LIU Brooklyn.

The Blue Devils will finally return home on Oct. 7th where they will face Fairleigh Dickinson to continue NEC play.
