In a proud salute to those who served, the Central Connecticut State University Veterans Affairs Department honored the heroes who have worn the nation’s uniform.
Led by Interim Dean Dr. Gilbert Gigliotti, the department hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day ceremony recognizing student veterans, active-duty members and others whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire the university community.
The event began with a performance of the national anthem, followed by a touching rendition of “Amazing Grace” from the CCSU Wind Ensemble. The music set a solemn and respectful tone as attendees gathered to reflect on the meaning of service, patriotism and sacrifice.
Three veterans and active-duty members were honored. The Student Veteran Award was presented to Andrew Willard, who served four years in the U.S. Air Force. Willard reflected on the appreciation for those who have served.
“You see people going out and getting the recognition they really didn’t have … it’s cool seeing all the ceremonies happening,” Willard said.
The Great Elm VFW Post 9945 Wethersfield Veterans Scholarship was awarded to U.S. Army Guard Specialist Alexa M. Duran. The Veterans Public Service Award for excellence was awarded to U.S. Navy Reserve Cmdr. John R. Buckley.
The ceremony gave recognition to those awarded and to the branches of the military. In a speech delivered by Gigliotti, he advised people on how to properly recognize a veteran.
“How can we pay our respects to our veterans … two words: thank you,” Gigliotti said.
Buckley followed that by addressing the need for patriotism.
“This hall should be filled … think about the sacrifices families have made,” Buckley said.
Christian Gutierrez, who works for the Veterans Affairs Department at CCSU, shared how the department is there for students.
“Central is recognized as a military-friendly school … at one point these people were in uniform out there and now they are reintegrating into society … and that’s where we come in, and the university,” Gutierrez said.
The event also allowed time to speak with veterans who were there to show their support for the award recipients.
Veteran Raymond L. Carrier attended the event and sat on stage as someone who has received these awards in the past. Carrier expressed deep respect for military members.
“The warmest thing to a veteran’s heart is that they’ve recognized that even though some of us didn’t return, some of us did, and they deserve our thanks,” Carrier said.
