Students were engaged in vigorous debates during last week’s Devil’s Den at 10.
Hosted by the Pre-Law Club, the event, Argument Arena: This or That, had two groups composed of two people face off in a casual debate over various common debates. Topics included whether pineapple belonged on pizza, dogs vs cats, early bird vs night owl and more.
The teams had one minute to develop three points in their arguments before taking turns making their case heard. After the debates were over, the audience voted on which team made the better case. The winning team would then stay onstage for the next round and have a shot at winning Amazon gift cards.
Although the turnout was low, the event was still enjoyable. The arguments that the teams came up with oscillated between a good point and something silly. Many times, someone would make an argument that would cause everyone present to burst into laughter. It was great fun seeing what everyone came up with to support their respective sides.
Participating in the debates themselves was an enjoyable experience. Being able to express your opinion in a relaxed and open environment was a great way to connect with other students and demonstrate your ability to make a compelling argument that was all in good fun. Everyone who participated in the event seemed to be in good spirits and genuinely enjoyed their time on stage.
A total of four Amazon gift cards were awarded to the participating students. Aaron Bronson and Michael Killeen were the first team to win the gift cards. An additional round of debating was needed to determine the runner-up team. In the end, Jeffery Hubbard and William Kuhnly were victorious.
Food and drinks were available for students to enjoy as they watched the debates. Students made their own tacos from a wide variety of ingredients, and they were popular with those in attendance.
Rain Millis said he always attends Devil’s Den at 10 and was intrigued by this event because it was about debating.
“I just, like, find debates interesting, so I was particularly piqued with interest in this one,” Millis said.
Carl Joseph Hoyt Jr. said he also frequently attends Devil’s Den events, but this is his first time attending something for the Pre-Law Club. He said the event looked like it would be fun.
“It’ll definitely be crazy,” Hoyt Jr. said. “I’m not sure how many people will show up because of the day off we have tomorrow, but otherwise, I think it’ll be pretty funny with people going up there and probably getting topics they have to debate over.”
Club President Gabrielle Cidern said they made the event to bring fun and funny arguments to campus. She said this was the Pre-Law Club’s first time hosting a Devil’s Den at 10 and their first time holding an event after the club was formed in 2022.
“It feels exciting,” Cidern said. “Luckily, we have a lot of support with the club. It’s fun and this event should be fun, so I’m excited.”
