The Student Government Association has begun its spring elections for senators, and voting will be open on April 12-14.

Last month, elections for President, Vice President and Treasurer were held. The winners were Haneen Alkabasi, Luke DeAngelis and Logan Palardy, respectively.

The declaration period for senators started on March 27. Students who wish to run could fill out a form that was emailed to all Central Connecticut State University students.

In order to apply for a position, you needed to fit the criteria. For example, to be capable of a commuter senator position, you must be a commuter.

During the declaration period, candidates submitted a form with information such as their name, their slogan, and some additional information about themselves in their bio.

Students who run must be in good academic standing and full-time students.

The campaign period is the hands-on period, in which students are spending time campaigning around campus.

Haneen Alkabasi, the SGA president-elect said that in most years, the turnout has been uncontested and members have shuffled around.

“I feel like there’s people that are more encouraged to be involved, which is great because, in this political climate, I think it’s important to be involved since politics affects everybody and influences you in one way or another,” said Alkabasi.

SGA members are optimistic for a positive voter turnout and overall involvement from the CCSU community in the spring 2023 election.
