Easy DIY Thanksgiving Recipes

Tessa Stack, Staff Writer

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. What’s on your grocery list? If you don’t yet know which dish to bring to Thanksgiving this year, here are some simple and easy recipes to make for your family, friends or even as a nice snack for yourself.

This first recipe is my favorite, since my mom often makes it.

Homemade Applesauce

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups of apples
  • ¾ cup of sugar
  • ⅓ cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Directions:

Start by peeling, slicing and coring the apples. I typically use Cortland apples for the sweet and slightly sour taste. Put the apple slices into a microwave-safe bowl.

Add the sugar, water and cinnamon.

Cover with plastic wrap and microwave it for six minutes to warm and soften the apples so that you can mash them.

Stir the mixture and put the bowl back in the microwave for five more minutes.

Let set for 10 minutes then continue mashing until the desired consistency is reached.

Easy Pickles

Ingredients:

  • 7 or 8 cucumbers
  • 3 medium onions
  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of celery seed
  • 1 tablespoon of salt

Directions:

Thinly slice the onions and cucumbers. Put the vegetables in the bowl or pan of choice. I prefer to use a glass bowl and transfer it if need be.

To make the dressing, take the celery seed, sugar, salt and apple cider vinegar and mix them into the bowl.

Combine the vegetables and dressing together and mix.

Note that the cucumbers and onions should be covered completely like pickles are in a jar.

Put the prepared pickles into the fridge leave it overnight.

When you wake up, you will have some delicious pickles to share with your loved ones.
