What Cardi B Did Is Wrong, But Not Bill Cosby Wrong

The latest trending Hashtag is “#SurvivingCardiB,” a not so subtle play-off of the “Surviving Rkelly” docu-series.

The 25-year-old rap mogul has found herself in the hot seat after a three-year-old Instagram live video has resurfaced.

In the explicit video, Cardi B can be heard passionately defending the fact that she is self-made and has worked hard to get to where she is in her career.

She then confesses that, back in her days as an exotic dancer, men would solicit her for sex. She admits that as a way to pay for studio time she would agree, take them back to a hotel, drug them and take their money.

In the age of the #Metoo movement where prominent figures, such as Bill Cosby, are being sentenced to prison for similar crimes, the internet is up in arms creating the hashtag as a way to bring awareness to the situation.

One Twitter user said “ ‘She did what she had to do’ No, no that’s not how it works, I don’t care what situation she was in, that gives no excuse for what she did. She should be held accountable 100%.”

As of now, no criminal investigation has been open.

Fans are coming to the artist’s defense, pointing out the fact that her image has always been raw and highlighting the fact that she speaks about these sort of instances in her music.

Songs such as G-Eazy’s “No Limit” feature Cardi B is along with artist ASAP Rocky exclaiming that she will engage in sexual activity with a man and then receive money. Another instance can be noted in her single “Lick,” featuring husband Offset.  The hook of the song is referring to committing a robbery.

Cardi B has addressed the situation in a since-deleted Instagram post where she states:

“I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options. Whether or not they were poor choices at the time, I did what I had to do to survive,” the statement said.

Before I continue with my personal opinion, I would like to release a disclaimer. I do not condone the crimes committed by Cardi B, and it is clear that what she did was 100 percent wrong and her actions cannot be defended.

What I will say is comparing what Cardi B did to what Bill Cosby did is a reach. Although she did admit to drugging the men, at no point during the interaction was anyone sexually assaulted.

An alleged survivor spoke out, and where I cannot verify the validity of his story, he never accuses the rapper of sexually assaulting him.

In rap culture, many artists allude to robbery or selling drugs as a means of survival before their careers take off or they made it big. Again, I am not defending nor condoning these behaviors, however, I do think it’s more of a fair comparison.

Bill Cosby and Rkelly are [allegedly] guilty of committing heinous crimes with unconscious or unwilling victims.

In this instance, all parties involved consented to sexual activities whether they transpired or not, and therefore I think it is unfair to compare her actions to the actions of those men.

Again, I would like to reiterate the fact that I do believe that a crime was committed. I cannot condone the drugging or robbery of an unsuspecting person. I just believe the comparison is a reach.

I am curious to see if more victims will come forward or pursue legal action.
