How To Survive Midterms

Sarah Willson, Editor-in-Chief

If you have not already started your midterm exams, odds are they are right around the corner. Whether you are a first-year student or a senior about to graduate, exams at any point in your college career can be stressful. And every year, they always seem to sneak up when you least expect it.

If you are struggling to stay afloat with all of the work you now have piled on top of you, here are a few tips to help.

1. Find That Perfect Study Spot

All over campus, there are tons of cozy and quiet spots perfect for cracking open a book. The stacks in the library, the Marcus White Living Room or even the second floor of the Student Center are all great spots to do the work you have probably procrastinated for too long.

2. Eat Healthy But Treat Yourself, Too

Fruits and veggies can fuel your body so you are up and ready, feeling energized for anything that comes your way. Quick on-the-go snacks like apples, carrots or clementines are perfect for a mid-day booster. If you are hooked on caffeine, try not to overdo it with the espresso shots or energy drinks. More often than not, they can do more harm than good by making you feel more worried or anxious than you already might be. But remember, it is okay to treat yourself with a little sugar boost, too. Just know your body’s limit.

3. Plan Accordingly

Nothing is worse than realizing you do not have nearly as much time as you originally thought. If you have that dreaded exam on a Thursday, it is probably best to start studying at least a week beforehand so you are not left cramming at the last minute. Starting early can help reduce stress and put your mind at ease so you are not left in a panic the night before.

4. Utilize Your Campus

There are so many campus resources that students fail to take advantage of. Whether it is the Learning Center or your professor’s office hours, finding some extra help is never a bad idea. Classmates, more often than not, are also willing to help. It is never a bad idea to form a study group, either.

5. Get Some Sleep… Seriously

All-nighters, though sometimes effective, are not the way to go. Your body needs sleep, especially during such a crazy time. It is okay to take a break and go to bed at a reasonable hour. Your body will thank you for it in the long-run.
