Baseball Drops Two In Maryland

It was another slow offensive weekend for Central Connecticut’s baseball team, managing just three runs in two games as they fell to Massachusetts and Navy.

In their first meeting with the Minutemen, the Blue Devils struck out 14 times, 11 coming against starter Jason Lusko. This time around, they fanned a whopping 19 times.

The Blue Devils had little answer for Minutemen starter Sean Harney, who gave up just five hits in six innings, striking out 10 while walking just one.

Things only got worse against Casey Aubin, who threw 2.2 innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced.

But the Minutemen were unable to generate much offense on the March day themselves. Senior Tom Curtin got the start for the Blue Devils and tossed five two-hit innings, striking out two. Though he did not walk any batters, he hit an alarming four.

Freshman Tim Buchek made his Blue Devil debut in relief, tossing three shutout innings. Though he allowed five hits, none scored thanks to his three strikeouts.

Jared Gallagher threw two innings. Though he struck out three, he uncharacteristically walked three. Despite this, things remained scoreless after nine, sending the game into extra innings.

Andrew Braun entered the game in the 11th inning. After hitting a batter who was then moved over on a sacrifice bunt, Minutemen right fielder Logan Greene ended the game when a Peyton Stephens error in right field scored the runner from second, leading to the 1-0 loss.

The team was back in action on Sunday taking on Navy, where they generated their most offense in three games, plating two runs on seven hits. But this was not enough, as they fell to the Midshipmen by a score of 5-2.

Junior Brandon Fox got the start for the second time this season and was not quite as successful as his first time out. Fox yielded two earned runs on eight hits. But thanks to errors, the Blue Devils trailed 5-2 when Fox exited.

Senior Mike Appel relieved Fox and threw two strong innings of shutout ball. Prior to the season, head coach Charlie Hickey said the key for teammate Appel would be not letting so many runners on base and he did just that on Sunday. Appel yielded no hits and just one walk while striking out three.

On offense, Central struck out 10 times against Midshipmen pitching.

The only run batted in for the Blue Devils on the day was junior and newcomer designated hitter Dave Matthews, who clubbed a double in the fifth inning.

Junior second baseman Chandler Debrosse collected two more hits for a total of four on the weekend.

Sophomore outfielders Jake Siracusa and Christian Layne also chipped in with hits on the day, as well as freshman first baseman Jack Nolan.

The Blue Devils will look for their offensive breakthrough when they are back in action on Wednesday at home against Hartford before they travel to Florida for five games against St. Bonaventure, Kansas and Saint Joseph’s.
