Video Game Review: “Enter the Gungeon”

After a long day of studying, it is nice to settle down and play a game that is easy to pick up and simple to understand… and then get completely destroyed by the brutal difficulty.

“Enter The Gungeon” strikes the balance between insane difficulty and simple mechanics. It is a top-down, Bullet Hell shooter with adorable pixel art.

You play as one of four characters on an epic journey to the Gungeon, a dungeon where everything is gun-themed in true American fashion.

My favorite thing about the game is the huge variety of weapons. There are 221 guns in the Gungeon, all of which are unique. There is an AK-47, an Akey-47, which fires keys, a gun that has a hat, a gun that shoots bullets, a bullet that shoots guns, a super-soaker, a wooden 2×4, a lowercase “r” that shoots the word “bullet,” a barrel that shoots fish and a freeze ray.

You explore randomly generated rooms with three different possible boss fights at the end of every chamber. The goal of the game is to find the Gungeon’s greatest treasure: a gun that can kill the past.

To get there, you will have to fight through all five chambers, bosses and assemble the ammo needed to kill your past.

The game is perma-death however, so every time you fail, it is back to the first chamber. Gungeon is a game where you progress little by little, learning a new trick and doing better each time.

By the time I was able to pull through and make it to the fourth chamber with a single point of health left, I was also able to complete the first chamber consistently, sometimes I did not even take damage.

This is only the surface though, as each room has chances for several different types of random encounters: special items that change how you play, new abilities that activate when you carry certain items, entrances to secret levels, surprise mini-bosses, the list goes on.

The game also follows an unlock system where you can choose the new items you want to appear later in the game. The more you play, the better you get and the more items have a chance to appear later on.

“Enter The Gungeon” is incredibly fun to play. I can relax after studying and go a few rounds, unlocking a new item or defeating a boss that destroyed me earlier.

I am 35 hours into the game and I am still finding new secrets and unlocking special items.

The game is available on PC and all consoles, including the Nintendo Switch, for $15.00.

The game also supports local co-op, where you can grab a second controller and play as a special character exclusive to co-op.

If you are looking for a fun game with a lot of style and ton of interesting content. Then you are now ready to enter, the Gungeon.
