Winners And Losers Of The NBA Trade Deadline

Trevi Alickolli, Social Media Editor

The NBA trade deadline has come and passed and it did not disappoint. Although one of the best players in the league, Anthony Davis, did not get traded (despite his request) there was a total of 19 deals that were achieved.

It seemed like every team was in the mix and involved with a trade in some way. Going through the deals, mostly everyone came out of the trade a winner.

Winners

Philadelphia 76ers

  • Philadelphia showed how aggressive they can be earlier in the season when they acquired Jimmy Butler. They maintained their aggressive mindset through the trade deadline as they acquired the likes of All-Star caliber forward Tobias Harris, effectively forming a “Big Four.” Additionally, they added a few role players to solidify their rotation. Philly is going all out as they try to compete for titles but their goals are not short term. They hope to re-sign Harris in the summer and hope to dominate for a long time to come.

Markelle Fultz

  • In a series of moves by the 76ers to add depth to their bench, they dealt away former number one overall pick Markelle Fultz to the Orlando Magic. This is simple, Fultz is a winner strictly because he now gets a fresh start as he tries to return from injury and resurrect his once promising career in Orlando.

Milwaukee Bucks

  • The Bucks, much like the 76ers, are in a win-now mode as they try to make a hard push to the NBA Finals. As of Feb. 7, they are the number one seed in the Eastern Conference and they just added an offensive weapon in Nikola Mirotic. Mirotic is likely to come off the bench for the Bucks and he will provide them with plenty of scoring to lead the second unit. He provides versatility offensively as a stretch four, scoring from inside and out, while also providing some defense and rebounding. The Bucks look like one of the most dangerous teams in the East, but they are going to have to battle with the likes of Philly and the Toronto Raptors, who both made moves at the deadline themselves.

 Marc Gasol

  • Gasol has not been a part of a legitimate title contending team in a long time. As the Memphis Grizzlies have been considered a rebuilding team, they sent him to one of the powerhouses in the East and that is probably a dream come true for the 34-year-old veteran center.

 Boston Celtics

  • Though they did not make a big trade, Anthony Davis did not get traded, meaning Boston has a shot to trade for the star big man in the summer. That’s a win on its own.

There are virtually no losers when it came to this year’s NBA trade deadline. No team made any outrageously horrific trades that made no sense in any way. With that being said, there were a few questionable moves.

Losers

Los Angeles Lakers

  • The waiting game has not worked well for the Lakers in recent history. The lack of an aggressive push cost them All-Star forward, Paul George, who is having an MVP caliber season. If the trend continues, it might cost them another All-Star forward in Kawhi Leonard and potentially Davis. We’ll just have to wait until summer to find out how the latest Lakers saga unfolds.

 Dallas Mavericks

  • During their game against the Charlottette Hornets, the Dallas franchise finalized a deal to trade Harrison Barnes to the Sacramento Kings halfway through the game. Instead of letting him sit for the entire duration of the game, Barnes played the first two quarters, then was benched after halftime when the trade was completed. You simply cannot trade a player mid-game while he is logging minutes for your organization. Show some class, Mavericks.

There were other trades that went down, but these were the most impactful on the future of the NBA. The deadline created great excitement around the NBA and it is likely to continue through the All-Star break, the playoffs and the championship.

Stay tuned, NBA fans.
