NEC Men’s Update: FDU Stays Hot

After another week of Northeast Conference play, things are sitting closer than ever, with eight of the 10 schools sitting just two games apart.

The hottest team in the conference continues to be Fairleigh Dickinson. After a 1-4 start, the Knights have won five in a row and sit in a tie for second, just one game out of first place.

The team played two nail-biters, edging out LIU Brooklyn by just three, before taking down first place Robert Morris in a double-overtime thriller.

Guard Darnell Edge continues to be the star for the Knights, averaging 24 points this week.

As for the Colonials, they are on the opposite end of the spectrum, dropping both of their contests. Entering the week 9-1 at home, they were unable to stop cross-state rival Saint Francis (PA) before losing the aforementioned game to FDU.

The Colonials still sit in first place with a 7-3 record, but now have just a one-game lead on three fast approaching teams.

After defeating the Colonials, Saint Francis (PA) took care of business at Mount St. Mary’s who are the one team that appear out of contention, at least for the moment.

One team that also appeared out of contention entering the week was Central Connecticut after a heartbreaking loss to Bryant and being dominated by LIU Brooklyn.

This week, the Blue Devils upset Saint Francis (BKN) then got their revenge against the Bulldogs. They now sit at 4-6 and in a tie for eighth place with a chance to return to the tournament for the second-straight season.

Another team to get two big wins was Sacred Heart. Though the Pioneers did what was expected when they defeated the last place Mount, the win was far more significant, as it marked just the second time they won on the road all season. If they can manage to pull off more road wins, they will be in a position to finish in the top four and host a tournament game at the Pitt Center, where they have lost just once all season.

The team that took the biggest hit was Saint Francis (BKN), one of two teams to drop both their contests, falling from second place to a logjam at fifth, with a home game now in jeopardy. The Terriers traveled to Connecticut where they lost to a struggling CCSU squad before falling to Sacred Heart. They will return home to take on Wagner and FDU next week as they look to get back on track.

The other team to go win-less was LIU. Following the three-point loss to FDU, the Blackbirds were handed a double-digit loss at the hands of Wagner. They will have a chance to get revenge on the Seahawks at home and have another winning opportunity against the Mount.

For Wagner, they had an uncharacteristic loss to Bryant at home by seven points. The Seahawks were unstoppable at home in conference play last season but have already lost three games at the Spire Center this season. They will head on the Brooklyn road trip this week.

With a majority of the conference clumped together, it just takes one team getting hot to distinguish them from the pack with just four weeks remaining in the regular season.
