CCSU Travels To The Roaring 20’s

A decade dance for the record books. On Friday, Feb. 1., as students walk into the student center, you can catch friends playing pool in breakers dressed in their best 1920’s attire, suspenders and all. As the dance starts at 8 p.m., the doors opened to reveal a balloon arch of gold, black and white in the center.

To the right, students have a great photo opportunity sitting in a light up oval swing with two matching bunnies. A dance floor parked front in center of the stage with the DJ playing popular music ranging from Ne-Yo’s, “Miss Independent,” Cardi B’s, “I Like It Like That” and Drake’s “Gods Plan.”

The tables are draped with a black table cloth and white feathers in a vase wrapped with gold and black Mardi-Gras-styled beads. Students could take photos with the photo booth on the balcony. You can pose with a variety of props in front of a gold high tech mirror, which you could also add emojis onto your picture.

Everyone was dressed for a speak easy club; from flapper dresses, modern day formal wear, ball gowns, knee length, suits and ties, button up and slacks topped with suspenders, even the iconic fashion statement of pant-suits. Everyone had their own personal interpretation of the 20’s.

Throughout the night, students could participate in a variety of contents to win prizes. The first one was to see who can do the best “Charleston Dance.” Some added their own spin on it, while others tried to copy the video showed as demonstration. The winner took home a ticket to Central Activities Network’s upcoming Spring Concert.

The second contest was musical chairs to win a certificate stating ‘you are the champion’ at musical chairs.

Dangerous it was. The competition was fierce. The will to fight for the seat created a lot of people falling on the floor. One person even jumped over the row of seats to make it to the next round. While others gathered around to get a good view, people cheered for their friends to win.

The third contest was at the end of the night, for best dressed. This should have been towards the beginning because after a night of dancing some outfits were not in the state, they were upon entering.

The Gatsby jokes were the best part, with student Brian Blake stating: “I am Jay Gatsby, thank you for coming to my party, I will be taking a swim later if anyone wants to join.” While another person from his friend group further down the line rebuttled stating how he was Nick Caraway, another “Great Gatsby” reference.

The energy of the room was calm at the start of the party while everyone was eating their grilled chicken, pasta, salad and steamed carrots. The party picked up when the people hit the dance floor to kill it at the “Cha Cha Slide.”

When it came to the slower songs, people even asked others to dance, including everyone making it a happy environment and creating memories.
