All standings and stats are reflective of Saturday, Jan. 19.

As the women’s basketball season gets deeper and deeper into conference play, every game becomes meaningful. While the top and bottom of the Northeast Conference has become apparent, almost all of the 10 teams still have a chance of making the illustrious conference tournament.

At the top of the NEC are the Sacred Heart Pioneers and the Robert Morris Colonials. Both are on five-game winning streaks and are currently the only teams undefeated in NEC play.

Sacred Heart currently ranks inside the NEC’s top five in scoring offense (fourth) and defense (second). They are also league best in assist to turnover ratio.

The Pioneers are led by graduate forward Katherine Haines. Currently, Haines is sixth in the NEC, averaging 16.2 points per game and second with 10 rebounds per contest. She is also second in the league with 2.4 blocked shots per game.

SHU was predicted to finish third and has lived up to the hype.

Robert Morris, the preseason favorite, currently leads the league in scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal percentage defense, turnover margin and steals per game. They have scored at least 60 points in every conference matchup.

While the Colonials may not have a dominant scorer in Haines, they have a do-it-all Swiss army knife in Nneka Ezeigbo. The junior center is currently 18th in the conference in points scored, sixth in rebounds, 14th in field goal percentage, sixth in steals and fifth in blocked shots per game.

The league’s number one seed will likely be determined when both teams face off on Jan. 28.

As for the rest of the league, currently, Saint Francis (BKN), Wagner and Saint Francis (PA) are all tied for third place at a 3-2 record in conference play.

St. Francis (BKN) leads the league in almost every offensive category, including scoring offense, field goal percentage and three point percentage. Wagner is middle of the pack in most categories besides rebounding defense (first) and assists (second). However, they have two players inside the top five with the impressive turnover to assist ratios in Nakylia Carter and Alayshia Dailey.

While St. Francis (PA) is on a two-game losing streak, they hold arguably the most impressive player in the conference in Jessica Kovatch. The senior currently leads the league in scoring and three-pointers made per game.

She recently broke the record for second most three-pointers in NCAA women’s history while her 21.4 points per game currently ranks 12th in the country. If the defending champion Red Flash want to succeed, it will be by the scoring of Kovatch.

Farleigh Dickinson and Bryant currently sit tied at sixth with a 2-3 record while Mount Saint Mary’s and Central Connecticut State are tied for eighth at 1-4. LIU Brooklyn currently holds tenth place to themselves with a 0-5 record.

However, despite their losing records, all five teams have plenty of time to improve in NEC and earn a top-four seed.

Sacred Heart and Robert Morris may currently be dominating the NEC, there is no telling where the league may be come conference tournament.

Every team and every player will be looking to improve their standing as they march towards the end of the regular season.
