Friday at the Joe Donahue Games was a day of personal records for Central Connecticut’s indoor track and field team, with the women’s team achieving six personal records.

Freshman thrower Danyelle Engels, competing in her second meet of the indoor season, had a personal record in both the shot put and the weighted throw. With a throw of 10.57 meters and 8.78 meters, Engels achieved her personal best while also being the highest placing Blue Devil in the shot put.

In that same event, sophomore Kailyn Accetura also achieved a personal best with a throw of 5.36 meters.

In the weighted throw, sophomore Celine Delice joined the PR bandwagon with a throw of 11.97 meters, the highest placing Blue Devil in the event, finishing sixth out of nine throwers.

The other two Blue Devils to reach a personal record was sophomore Emily Appleton and freshman Libby Walker, both while competing in the 800-meter run. Walker crossed the finish line with a time of 2:39.75, while Appleton was not far behind at 2:59.61.

Though not achieving any personal records, senior Sierra Nesmith had another strong showing, finishing second of four runners in the 500-meter run while finishing third of 10 in the triple jump.

Nesmith is a part of what coach Eric Blake calls a “very strong veteran group” on the women’s side.

“Our depth could be an issue, but our leadership is not,” Blake continued.

But the personal bests were not exclusive to the women’s team, as members of the men’s team achieved three of their own, highlighted by freshman thrower Andrew McCarthy, who accounted for two.

In the weighted throw, McCarthy had a throw of 12.25 meters. In the shot put, he had a throw of 11.43 meters. In that same event, classmate Ed Radizon set a personal record of his own with a throw of 12.64 meters.

The only Blue Devil on either side to win an event was junior Richard Grudzwick, who took home the win in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:06.26. It was a continuation of a strong indoor season for Grudzwick, who was named Northeast Conference Co-Athlete of the Week just two weeks ago.

At this stage in the season, Blake says he wants to “see good habits when we get to these midseason meets.”

“An example of that would be running 500 meters of a 500, not 490 meters of a 500,” Blake said.

But Blake said his team lived up to his expectations on Friday.

Going forward, Blake said he wanted to see “faster times and longer marks” from his athletes.

The Blue Devils will have another chance to continue to improve on their times next weekend when they head to the John Thomas Invitational at Boston University.
