Netflix It: Sex And The City

The American romantic comedy-drama television series Sex in the City explores and tackles social issues such as sexuality, safe sex, feminism and relationships. Created by Darren Star and produced by HBO, the series was based off the book Sex and the City by Candance Bushnell.

The 94-episode show takes place in New York City and revolves around a group of four women, three in their mid-thirties and one in her forties, all who share different nature and ever-changing sex lives. Still, they remain inseparable from each other.

The show portrays a wide variety of characters, all of whom bring different personalities to the table. One of the girls, Carrie Bradshaw, who is played by Sarah Jessica Parker, is a writer and self-described sexual anthropologist that discusses modern sex life in a newspaper column explaining her own experiences to search for a perfect partner. Samantha Jones, played by Kim Cattrall, is the sexually active, bold and adventurous one. Charlotte York, played by Kristin Davis, can be considered the conservative and naïve one. Last but not least, Miranda Hobbes, who is portrayed by Cynthia Nixon, is the sarcastic, yet headstrong one.

The girls experience love, loss and betrayal and, at the same, time can be considered comical and interesting. Other characters such as Mr. Big, portrayed by Chris Noth, is Carrie’s charming, emotionally unavailable love interest who is also is one of the major plots in the series. Additionally, the best part of the show could be considered the early lives of the four women, along with the writer’s ability to explore social life, sex and relationships with multiple perspectives and personalities. The show also explores the bond of friendship and understanding among women and how changes in women’s roles in society, both in the workplace and behind closed doors, also affect their relationships with men.

Sex in the City was nominated for 55 Emmy Awards, going on to win seven of them. Feature films based on the series were released, such as Sex in the City 2.
