Newly elected Interim SGA President Jamie Canny opened her first full meeting by introducing a new communication tool that the senate can use in order to be in touch with one another prior to their weekly meetings.
Canny created a Wiki page with the ability to have blog discussions, share important links with information such as a letter concerning Gov. Dannel Malloy’s new budget and CSUS system overhaul proposals and other important events happening on campus concerning the senate. The Wiki page Canny created will be open to the public for viewing.
After introducing the page, Canny then introduced an email that she received concerning the budget resolution that soon needs to be sent out. The senate is in the process of sharing their opinion on Malloy’s recent budget and CSUS overhaul announcements. After Canny established the resolution proposal, the senate discussed the actions that they can take in order to continue sending out the proposal along with changes that can be made to make the resolution ideal to be sent out. There was much debate concerning the matter and many of the senate stated that it did not need to be sent today, saying that matters such as this takes time and effort of the whole committee to delegate and that it is important to make sure it was going to benefit CCSU.
After reports from the vice president and the treasurer, the senate had a debate on whether or not senators should stand when speaking in order to make sure the entire senate could clearly hear their arguments. After debate, the senate approved the motion that would now make senators required to stand and talk into a microphone when speaking in order to improve voice projection. The senate also hopes that the motion will help grab the attention of other senators as well.
Sen. Eric Bergenn, concerned about the topic of the resolution, asked during open floor if he could present his own resolution that he created himself. Bergenn’s focal point in his resolution was to represent the students and make sure that the students here at CCSU had the most available resources in order to obtain a successful education and future. After Bergenn displayed his resolution to the senate, senators debated on whether or not they should discuss or amend the resolution now or wait for next week’s meeting before proceeding.
Vice President Elizabeth Braun stated that it would be best to tackle the resolution now since all the senators were present and able to discuss the matter. Despite Braun’s argument, there was still debate that there should be no rush on the matter and that it should be thought about during the coming week before the next meeting where the matter should then be addressed. A motion was then put on the table that there would be 20 minutes devoted to the resolution and that each senator had two minutes to state their viewpoint. The motion, however, failed.
Although this was decided, Bergenn took the floor for the remainder of the time to answer questions from the other senators about his proposal. Bergenn broke down all the statements and sectioned them down for further understanding for of all the senate. The senate then made repairs and adjustments as a whole in order to send one in as soon as possible.
Quorum was lost late in the meeting meaning voting on major decisions would have to be held until SGA’s next meeting.
