According to a press release from Central Connecticut State University, nearly 60 students were displaced after a fire occurred in one of the campus’s residence halls on Monday, March 4.
The fire occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on the first floor of F. Don James Hall and forced students to evacuate the building, according to the press release.
According to the press release, the sprinkler system kept the fire at bay until the New Britain Fire Department arrived at the scene quickly to put it out, assuring no students were injured.
The press release made it clear that the displaced students were temporarily relocated to Memorial Hall and the Student Center, where they waited while the university worked to secure hotel rooms, complimentary laundry service, transportation services and food for students who were affected by the fire.
On March 5th, authorities declared the building safe and allowed the displaced students to return to the residence hall, according to the press release.
CCSU President Zulma R. Toro said the university is happy that the students are safe and that they did everything right to ensure the situation didn’t get out of hand, according to the press release.
According to the press release, most of the damage was to the lobby. Contractors were working to repair the area, which is expected to be fixed by the end of the week.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by fire officials, but according to the press release, it is believed to be faulty electrical equipment.
