Step into ‘The Shade Room’ Where Everyone’s A Critic

Tyra McClung, Assistant Arts and Entertainment Editor

The convergence of popular blogs and social media allows everyday readers, now more than ever, an opportunity to express their opinions in the comment sections of popularized news stories.

Instagram blog “The Shade Room,” has not only revolutionized the way audiences consume entertainment news, but also maintains a complete monopoly over the online community’s interactions with urban entertainment media.

“The Shade Room” was created by Angelica Nwandu originally as an Instagram account. The blog has since expanded its online presence.

“The Shade Room” currently distributes its information through several channels, including a website where followers can find the full length in-depth article of a featured Instagram post or story that caught their interest.

The entertainment centered Instagram blog is home to 15.3 Million “Roommates” or followers.

Since its start in 2014, the account has managed to accumulate a larger following than Perez Hilton, TMZ, E! News and People Magazine.

Central Connecticut State University senior and “Roommate” Walatsebi Lomotey, explained that he uses the online blog as his personal “CNN.”

“The Shade Room” not only shares the latest in celebrity gossip, hip-hop culture and world news, but also highlights the accomplishments made from within the African-American community and often promotes black-owned businesses.

CCSU junior Mariama Diallo follows the blog “to be updated on mostly African-American news” and to view the comment sections, one of the sites most popular features.

“That’s literally the first thing I click on after seeing the post. I like to see how other people from around the world think of certain issues and news of society,” Diallo said. “I comment because I like to give my opinions on certain things and other times I’m just tagging my friends or just laughing at the post.”

Instagram’s latest update allows for followers to view the comments of prominent online figures and other celebrities before showing the most liked comments and so on.

It is a very interactive blog and the comment section may be the factor that sets “The Shade Room” apart from the other online gossip sites.

The comment section may equally the most controversial part of the blog.

Celebrities often criticize the blog for only posting the negative aspects of their actions and lives. These public figures often “step into ‘The Shade Room’” to clear up any rumors or correct any untrue statements that may have been reported.

Because Instagram is so unfiltered the posts are subject to trolls, private accounts and people with a lot of time on their hands sharing their very critical opinions on celebs and their families.

As the comment section sometimes gets disrespectful, and so many of the celebrities mentioned in the posts follow the blog, commentators may face the wrath of a witty clap back.

“The comment section gets out of hand and people think they have a right to speak on certain situations that they have no clue about. Yes, we all have a voice because its social media, but people can be cruel,” senior Brittany Thompson said. “I do comment, but always positive things, I like hyping the posts. I’d rather comment something positive and keep negative comments to myself.
