In another road weekend, the Blue Devils went 1-1 against conference opponents Saint Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn, falling to 3-1 in NEC games and 6-9 overall.

Friday’s matchup against the Saint Francis (BKN) Terriers proved to be a historic one, marking the 300th win for head coach Linda Sagnelli in her time at CCSU.

The Blue Devils came out cold to start, and after bad sets and errors were down 8-3 to the Terriers. Three kills from Emma Henderson would help Central tie the game at 10.

The teams would battle back and forth, but after a Kaprelyan kill followed by a Terrier error, Central would take its first lead at 15-14 and would cap off the 6-1 run leading 19-15. The Blue Devils would have the match point set up 24-18, but two errors from CCSU and a Terrier kill would bring SFBK within three.

An attack error from the Terriers would win the first set for the Blue Devils.

CCSU would lead 10-4 in the second set by forcing seven errors from the Terriers. The Blue Devils led throughout the set, and a Kaprelyan kill preceded an SFBK error that won Central the second set 25-19.

Both teams traded runs throughout the third set. With the game tied at 13, Central would use a 6-1 to open things up, and Kaprelyan kill would seal a win for the Blue Devils in straight sets.

Coach Sagneli’s 300th win for Central puts her at 426 for her entire career, including her 14-year tenure at Iona.

Things did not run as smoothly during Saturday’s matchup against LIU Brooklyn. Both teams entered the match undefeated in the NEC (3-0).

Central Connecticut dominated the first set. After jumping out to an early 8-1 lead, and quickly extended it to 19-7.

The Blackbirds shook off the first set loss and battled with the Blue Devils throughout the second. Central would hold a 23-22 lead after a kill by Kaprelyan, but an error and two kills would give the Blackbirds three straight to take the second set.

Five quick errors from Central would give the Blackbirds a 12-5 lead. Central would come within three, but LIU Brooklyn was able to close the set 24-19.

Central Connecticut kept things closer in the fourth and final set. After trailing four, the Blue Devils were able to tie the set three separate times. A Gala Galabova kill slimmed Central’s deficit to 23-24, but an LIU kill won the set and secured the match victory for the Blackbirds, 3-1.

Kaprelyan notched her second triple-double of the season in Saturday’s match, posting 18 kills, 19 assists and 16 digs. McDermott again tallied an impressive assist count, this time landing 25.

Central Connecticut sits at 6-9 overall, though still boasts an impressive 3-1 NEC record. Their conference record ties them with Bryant for second in the conference. The Blue Devils will look to grab more conference wins at home this week, going up against Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart.
