Barack Obama was re-elected president of the United States. Apparently some people took that news a little hard. They took it to the point where all 50 states have signed a petition to secede from the country. Every single state has at least 2,000 signatures stating they want to secede. Connecticut currently has approximately 3,625 signatures.
The rules regarding petitions like these require at least 25,000 signatures within 30 days to be considered by the President. As of now seven states have gotten at least 25,000 within 30 days, Texas being the most with over 115,000 signatures. It is doubtful that Connecticut will be joining the ranks of this movement.
I find this movement pathetic. Just because your desired candidate lost the election, throwing a hissy fit is childish. I didn’t realize that the Americans who signed this petition became five-year-olds and decided to run away from home.
Democrats did not threaten to secede from the country when George W. Bush won and was re-elected. No matter what party one may be in, when their person loses they quip, “I’m leaving the country,” but that doesn’t happen. It is all talk. For the most part people just suck it up and deal with it the best they can. It’s what I would have done if Romney had been elected.
Any state successfully seceding from the United State is doubtful. Governors of some states with enough signatures have shot down the idea of seceding, including Texas governor Rick Perry, even though he has spoken of it in the past.
The government should treat this issue as parents do when their child wants to run away. If it comes to pass we should let the states that want to secede, secede. Let them feel what it’s like to be on your own without any funding from the federal government. That means those states, now would be considered countries, will have to undoubtedly raise taxes on its citizens to provide funding to sustain itself financially.
I’m sure they would be crawling back to be part of this nation again, as any child would after running away for an hour or so. I know it sounds mean, but I say that to make a point. Even though they don’t like the government, they have to depend on it to help fund their programs so that people can do what they do.
It’s not 1860 anymore. Democrats and liberals had to deal unhappily with George W. Bush for eight years without wanting to petition to secede in mass numbers. I’m sure Republicans and conservatives can live with another four years of Obama.
And speaking of 1860, let’s not repeat what actually happened in that year. I’d rather not have America see and deal with another civil war. It would not work out for everybody.
