A university computer in the Business office suffered a “malware” virus resulting in the exposure of Social Security numbers to unauthorized access.
According to the email sent to the entire campus by President Jack Miller, a large number of current faculty, staff and student workers are at risk.
According to Mark McLaughlin, Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications, the incident happened in December and the university has been working on it ever since, conducting a forensic analysis to determine who was affected.
Currently, the university has the information on those who were exposed and will be sending out a letter to them within a week.
To those who were threatened by the virus, CCSU is offering identity theft protection for two years, free of charge.
Anyone with concerns can check the CCSU website: www.ccsu.edu/faq for more information on the breach.
