As of Thursday afternoon, all academic buildings on campus have officially been opened and are up and running.
Classes were scheduled to start at noon today and are expected to run normally for the rest of the week. According to Mark McLaughlin, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, there’s not one building on campus that hasn’t been restored to its normal state.
“All the buildings on campus are up and running as usual and to the best of my knowledge will be operating under normal hours,” said McLaughlin.
McLaughlin also says that most events on campus were canceled for today due to difficulties the University would face in communicating to people that they would still be on.
“The faculty-directed/departmentally sponsored events on campus have been canceled for today,” said McLaughlin. “There was no way to get the word out that they could be operational.”
However, some organizations chose to keep their events as scheduled. For example, CAN opted to still hold their “Dia de los Muertos” event in the Devil’s Den tonight at 10:00 pm.
All classes and activities were canceled since the Storm hit Saturday night when the University lost power. However, late last night they attempted to switch everything on campus over from the generators directly to electricity provided by Connecticut Lighting and Power, and were successful in doing so.
While Thursday morning classes were already canceled the night before, the University needed adequate time to get all the buildings heated and back to a normal state. This was to be expected as President Jack Miller stated at his conference on Wednesday that about four hours were needed to make sure the buildings were all ready to go and that there would be no more electrical interruptions.
McLaughlin also says to keep up to date on what future events will be affected by this week’s outages. He added that students can always check the University’s events calendar to see which events will take place as scheduled and which won’t.
