Led by Anthony Raneri, Bayside begins 2011 with their newest album Killing Time, featuring their single “Sick, Sick, Sick.”
Killing Time is the sheer epitome of everything that a Bayside album should have: catchy riffs, rip-your-heart-out lyrics and Raneri’s awesome vocals to bring it all together.
Bayside does this thing that many bands who have been around for 10 plus years don’t do: they have the capability to blow your mind using the same style that they’ve been using for their past four albums. Some people may argue that the band is just playing it safe, but I think it works for them. Another thing that’s come to mind while listening to Killing Time is Raneri’s ability to make me, as a girl, feel so terrible on behalf of my gender for breaking his heart. He knows we’re listening, ladies.
The band uses Killing Time as vehicle for delivering emotion and powerful lyrics to a wide range of audiences. If you’re a person who likes anything remotely close to rock, whether it be pop-punk, hardcore or punk in general, you’ll find something to love about this album. Through songs like “Already Gone” and “Sick, Sick, Sick,” Bayside sends their heart-wrenching lyrics right through your ears and into the pit of your stomach. I have yet to meet a person who couldn’t find something to like about this band.
One of my favorite things about Killing Time is the song “On Love, On Life.” It’s unlike any song on the album as Bayside ditches the drums and guitars and replaces them with this sad but dreamy little melody on a piano and a couple horns (but not in a weird ska way; it just works, trust me). Lyrically, the song is the same as all other Bayside songs, but it gives you an entirely different perspective on the band. It’s the song that could be anyone’s guilty pleasure.
If you’re into bands like Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory or I Am the Avalanche, you’ll be someone who can get down to Bayside.
