Edward Williams Jr., Central Connecticut State University’s star hurdler, was named Northeast Conference Co-Track Athlete of the Week this past week.
During the UMass Spring Opener, Williams placed first and ran a 13.96 in the 110-meter hurdles to break the CCSU program record. He was also named an NEC Prime Performer for his record-breaking performance.
“I’ve been running hurdles since 2016,” Williams said.
Williams played many sports growing up. In high school, his focus was on football. His father pushed for him to do track during football’s off-season, and it was then that he fell in love with the sport.
“My father is my coach,” Williams said. “He put me on to track.”
Williams got his start at Meridian Community College in Mississippi before going to Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York.
“I got a call from Coach after racing against [Central] a few times,” Williams said. “Central gave me the best offer.”
As a bonus for Williams, Central is close to home. Williams is from Waterbury, Connecticut, making Central the closest college to home that he has been to.
“I’ve never had a home meet before last year,” Williams said. “A home crowd makes for a great experience.”
Williams looks forward to Central hosting the 2024 NEC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship, May 4-5, and can’t wait to see his family and the Blue Devil faithful there.
“I’ve never had a home championship meet,” Williams said. “I’m very excited.”
When not on the track, Williams is studying for his criminal justice degree. He will graduate with his bachelor’s degree at the end of the semester.
Going forward, Williams has his sights set on nationals.
“I’m not satisfied yet,” Williams said. “I am taking it one race at a time. My main goal is to win races and break records.”
