Central Connecticut State University baseball lost its eighth consecutive game with a loss on Sunday to Merrimack College.
In the three-game series, CCSU totaled 27 hits and 10 runs.
Senior Jake Neuman and sophomore Zack Robinson combined to give up 11 hits in game one. Merrimack scored seven runs, four of which were earned. The Warriors defeated the Blue Devils 7-4.
Senior Anthony Mozzicato faced 25 batters in game two on Saturday. Senior Luke Garofalo and freshman Sam Hutchinson finished the game. The 7-5 loss was Mozzicato’s fifth loss of the season.
Central was nearly shut out by Merrimack on Sunday. In the bottom of the eighth, junior Gianno Merlonghi batted Torniero in. That was the only run the Blue Devils scored. After nine innings, Merrimack beat Central 9-1.
The mound saw sophomore Drew Munn for the first two innings and four relievers after, facing 35 batters.
Senior Michael Torniero said that despite the team’s struggles, it is important that they continue to play hard and look forward.
“Every day is a new opportunity, and what’s in the past is done with,” he said. We have six weekends left, which is a lot of time to try and make some noise.”
This is Central’s third consecutive conference series loss. Torniero identified a lack of teamwork as the team’s main challenge.
“In baseball, it’s hard to win when we don’t play together,” Torniero said. “Some days we hit well, some days we play defense and pitch well, but we haven’t been able to piece it together.”
Torniero said the team is frustrated but extremely confident in their talent.
“We know what we are capable of doing when we play together as a team,” he said.
With just six more weekends of conference play, the Blue Devils are looking to reset and get a fresh start.
“We approach each day as a new day regardless of the outcome the day before,” Torniero said. “We need to keep pushing and believing in ourselves just like we always have.”
The Blue Devils will be back home on Friday, April 12, for a three-game series against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
