The Central Connecticut State University women’s basketball team dominated every facet of the game during their 61-37 win over Saint Francis University on Saturday in Detrick Gymnasium.
The win improves CCSU’s record to 4-11 overall and 2-0 in Northeast Conference play.
Once again, the Blue Devils were led offensively by the dynamic backcourt of sophomore Samora Watson and senior Belle Lanpher, who contributed 13 and 17 points, respectively.
Sophomore Alonna Sellers also contributed 10 points in an impressive showing in the post.
Despite missing all seven of their three-point attempts in the first half and only making one three-pointer in the game, Central managed to shoot an efficient 45% from the floor.
“We’re a multi-dimensional team,” Lanpher said. “We can do a lot of things. Movement without the ball and Alonna [Sellers] being inside the paint really helped us.”
The Blue Devils continued to shine on defense, holding SFU to just 29% shooting from the floor and 14% from three. They also forced 17 turnovers, eight of which came from steals.
Lanpher came up with her usual three steals, while senior Meghan Kenefick added two.
Sellers’ impact was not only felt on the offensive side of the ball but she also anchored head coach Way Veney’s zone defense by making her presence known in the paint.
“We really wanted to stay in the paint,” Watson said. “They have a quick first step, so we were trying to get them to shoot, and that’s what we did.”
The Blue Devils have two straight road games before returning to Detrick Gymnasium on Jan. 21 to host National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
