NEC Women’s Update: Uncertainty Remains Throughout
February 27, 2019
Standings and stats are reflective of Saturday, Feb. 23.
There is only two weeks worth of games left to play in the regular season when it comes to the Northeast Conference and even now, the playoff picture is cloudier than it has ever been.
One thing that has been certain all year is the top seed. Robert Morris, despite losing their first game in the conference last week, remains dominant and in firm control of that top spot.
While some might look at the loss and think the Colonials are loosening their grip on the conference, they seem to have handled the loss well and moved on quickly. Since the loss, the Colonials have won two games and have scored 66 and 74 points, respectively. That is their highest scoring output since the end of January.
The Colonials defeated St. Francis (BKN) on Saturday 74-57. They had four double-digit scorers in Nneka Ezeigbo (16), Nina Augustin (14), Isabella Posset (11) and Ire Ozzy-Momodu (12) which led them to victory.
Offensively they seem to be clicking, while their defense remains the best in the conference. That is a scary sight for the rest of their remaining schedule. The Colonials stand with a 13-1 record in-conference and 16-9 overall.
If anyone is to catch Robert Morris, the best chance of doing so goes to the Sacred Heart Pioneers. The Pioneers are second in the conference with a 10-4 record and are the second team this season to reach double-digit wins in NEC play. The Pioneers had a roller-coaster this past week after losing to last place LIU Brooklyn 69-64 only to later take care of business at Central Connecticut, dominating the Blue Devils 73-46.
Sacred Heart’s Katherine Haines poured on 25 points against LIU Brooklyn, only to come back a few days later to score 24 against Central. The graduate forward has the hot hand as of late and looks ready for the postseason.
St. Francis (BKN) and Saint Francis (PA) are tied for third place in the conference at 9-5. SFBK defeated CCSU on Monday this past week and lost to first-place Robert Morris on Saturday.
While SFPA lost both of its games, falling to RMU and LIU, who is trying to make a late-season push to get into the playoffs.
Coming into the week, LIU had one win in conference. They closed out the week with three and are now tied for the last place in the playoffs with CCSU and Fairleigh Dickinson. The Blackbirds are riding a hot streak, winning their last two while their competitors for the last playoff spot are riding a very cold streak. CCSU has lost five in a row, while FDU has lost six.
With only two weeks left of NEC regular season play, the only thing that looks certain is the number one seed, Robert Morris. Every other seed has the potential to fluctuate all over the place as teams are racing towards the postseason.
This, of course, sets up a fantastic finish to the season for fans. So stay tuned, you are in for a wild one.
