Pause before you play the latest Assasian’s Creed; it may not be ready for the mission.
Assassin’s Creed Unity follows the story of a man named Arno Vincent Dorian. The story starts out very tragicly with Arno being orphaned and taken in by a noble named Francois De LaSerre. De LaSerre easily becomes a new father figure to Arno, and his daughter Elise becomes a romantic figure in his life.
The game takes place over two story lines. There’s the present story line of you, a person playing a helix: a game system from Abstergo, (a home version of the previous animus) which lets you track ancestors and “play” as them.
In the historical storyline, you follow a member of the elusive Assassin’s Brotherhood, who believe in freedom for the people and removing those who would fight against it. Namely the Templar Order who believes that the people are too chaotic, stupid and incapable of ruling themselves. These two factions are at odds throughout the game.
Unfortunately, De LaSerre also ends up being assassinated and Arno gets blamed for his adoptive father’s death landing Arno in prison next to Pierre Bellec, an assassin and now mentor to Arno.
Arno then discovers that, while his father was an assassin, his adoptive father and adoptive sister are Templars. Arno ends up escaping prison with Bellec and joining the Assassin’s order. From here, Arno begins hunting down De LaSerre’s killer.
The story of Assassin’s Creed Unity is phenomenal in every cut scene, every mission has you sitting on the edge of your seat wondering what’s going to happen next and how Arno is going to handle this next situation.
The plot is riddled with twists and interjections from a modern day story line that seems to pull you through other parts of France’s history.
Fans of the Assassin’s Creed games will find that the combat system is new, yet more challenging than the previous titles. It requires you to appropriately parry and dodge attacks and then deal damage yourself. While this is more challenging, it is more satisfying than merely pressing two buttons and managing to kill any enemy who may cross your path.
On top of this, the character customization allows you to specialize your version of Arno. Not only can you mix and match many abilities that you’ve seen before, but you can equip a variety of armor that gives a multitude of benefits to your play styles.
Unfortunately, this game has been buggy, glitchy and overall is not a completed project.
The game has been patched twice since it’s release to fix these issues but it’s clear that this is not enough and that the product was not ready for release. A multitude of people were excited for this title and have had a hard time accessing the game. This has made the wonderful story written by Ubisoft practically unplayable.
On top of this, the new and highly hyped co-op experience while fun with those you may know , may not give the same experience with out that easy communication.
Imagining playing a co-op mission without a voice-to-voice interaction seems like it would simply be chaos.
Furthermore, there are far too many items used for customization locked behind co-op missions, which makes playing co-op mandatory.
Overall, Assassin’s Creed Unity is a game with a fantastic story taking you throughout revolutionary France, but is lacking on the technical end. It would be wise to hold off on purchasing this game for a while if you haven’t yet and wait for appropriate updates to occur to improve the technical aspects of the game.
