CW recently introduced a new television series, “The 100.” The story takes place after an apocalypse on Earth where the only survivors live on a space station called the arc. When the arc is failing, they send a group of 100 teenage criminals to Earth to see if it’s survivable.
Clarke Griffin was locked up in juvenile detention on the space ship, considered a traitor, due to her determination to give the public full knowledge that the arc was dying. Her father was a mechanic who found this flaw, and he was executed. Now Clarke is determined to do her part in saving the human race, by making sure earth can be inhabited, so that the rest of the survivors in space, including her mother, can come to earth.
Finn is an adventurous guy who is intrigued by Clarke. Finn was imprisoned for taking an illegal space walk and goes out of his way to take care of Clarke.
Octavia Blake has been locked up her entire life; her mother hid her because she was only allowed one child, and ended up with more than that limit. Her brother, Bellamy Blake, risked his life and the life of someone else, to get on the ship and protect his sister. Once Octavia gets a taste of the freedom she never had, her behavior grows reckless, desperate to be known for something other than being trapped.
Wells Jaha is the son of the arc’s chancellor. His first instinct is to selflessly lead the group. Wells is opposed by Bellamy Blake, who takes over with chaos creating leadership. Bellamy though, has an ulterior motive, unbeknownst to his followers.
The group is supplied only with wristbands that let the council of the arc know if they’re alive, and the promise of supplies set on a mountain.
The story is a modern take on Disney Channel’s “Zenon” movie series, which followed a similar premise, where Zenon is a precocious teenage girl who lives on a space station and is punished by being sent to her Aunt who lives on Earth. “The 100” is also akin to the William Golding novel, “Lord of the Flies,” in which a group of young boys are alone on a deserted island, completely free of the boundaries of rules and law. Fans of “The Hunger Games” movie will likely become obsessed with this show.
Each episode comes filled with riveting adventures and plot twists. This is balanced out by the romance and drama that naturally comes with the teenaged cast, making for a thrilling show.
New episodes of the show come out on Wednesday nights, and you can catch up on missed episodes using the CW’s free app which lets you stream and watch full episodes of “The 100”.
