With the release of Dogs Eating Dogs Blink-182 did something they haven’t done in twenty years, they released an EP. Dogs Eating Dogs showcases a little of everything that the Blink trio has done since their 2005 breakup, and even showcases elements from their 2011 return album Neighborhoods.
“When I Was Young” is the first track on the EP. The song starts off slow and melodic with a piano part, but quickly picks up once the verse comes in and Delonge begins to sing. The chorus does not disappoint with Delonge singing, “It’s the worst damn day of my life”. “When I Was Young” is definitely one of the EP’s best songs.
The title track on the EP Dogs Eating Dogs is heavily influenced by Hoppus’ other band +44. Hoppus sings the verses and pre-chorus, with Delonge coming in with a very catchy chorus, backed by Barker’s very impressive drumming.
The third track on the EP is influenced by Delonge’s other band Angels & Airwaves. “Disaster” has a long intro, but the wait is well worth it with Delonge singing lyrics filled with angst and Hoppus delivering the hook singing, “fall in my arms again.” The chorus of this song sounds a little like an Angels & Airwaves track but it does not disappoint.
The fourth track and first single of the EP is “Boxing Day”. Blink decided to slow things down a bit with this one; “Boxing Day” is an acoustic track with a catchy verse and electronic drums. Hoppus sings the bass heavy chorus with the words, “I’m empty like the day after Christmas”.
The EP’s final track is a song called “Pretty Little Girl,” a song which starts off slow but picks up in the pre-chorus. This is followed by an extremely catchy chorus which sounds as if could be the theme song to any romance movie. This would be the best song on the EP, but due to a weird guest appearance by Yelawolf during the bridge, the song loses its feel a little bit. But it then quickly picks things back up with the final pre-chorus and chorus to end both the song and the EP.
Dogs Eating Dogs is a fantastic EP showcasing a quick preview of what the band will do for the highly anticipated full-length album later this year. Every song on this EP is good in its own particular way, ranging from fast paced punk rock songs, to acoustic ballads. Dogs Eating Dogs is a fantastic EP with only a few weak moments. It was a very good way to hold over fans for the bands highly anticipated full-length album later this year.
