Devils Den @ 10 Presents: Headphone Disco

A silent party might sound like the least interesting way to spend a Thursday night, but the Student Center kept things interesting bringing back Headphone Disco.

The “Devils Den @ 10 p.m.” event allowed students to dance and mingle as if at a party or club, without the risk of noise complaints with the help of their music providing headphones.

“It’s really cool, we’ve done it in the past and it’s funny honestly,” Graduate Intern Linzy Martinez said. “You take off the headphones and you just hear feet shuffling or people singing along and not realizing because they can’t hear in the headphones. But it’s a really good time.”

The headphones provided students with two station options. They were able to switch back and forth between a top 40 station and a hip-hop station.

Each station was represented by either a blue or green glow under the headphones.

The stations were being controlled live by two different DJ’s. DJ Dice and student worker Kevin Guy.

The DJ’s partook in a little friendly competition, wanting to see the dance floor represented by their respective color. Knowing the public has a tendency to be fickle, the pressure was on.

“Any click I do, anything I do, everyone is going to hear. Of course you want to keep more people on your station and you want to have more people knowing DJ Kevin or whoever it may be, ‘oh yeah you have a better variety of music, you have more people that you can relate to, understand’ because you know music is the language of everyone,” Guy said.

More than anything, students enjoyed the musical variety as well as the freedom the headphones provided.

“I feel personally that the headphones are a little unique, but at the same time it provides everyone with their own personal space to kind of dance at their own pace, and have the volume turned up at their own pace,” CCSU junior Emily Hughes said. “It provides a very personal experience for the students here.”

Some students felt that the personal touch provided by the headphones brought the students in attendance closer together.

“I feel like everyone is more connected like this is a group thing. We’re in like our own world and no one [cares] about what’s going on over there,” student Jordan Jackson said.  “They’re listening to their music so you don’t even think about how crazy you look right now, because we all really do look crazy, but you’re not even thinking about that,” Jackson continued.

In between the shuffling feet, free-form dance moves and mumbled hums sat the Chess Club for their weekly meeting.

The club meets at the same time every week and is not bothered by the range of events occurring during their meetings.

“I think it’s nice because it advertises the club and people get involved that would never have played chess sometimes come over and play.  And it’s fun to be in here all the time because there’s always something new going on,” Chess Club President Kyle Triplett said.

Club member Anrick Morgan agreed to state that it’s a nice blend, the mixture of chess and the events as well as being able to meet new students.
