09/19 FEMA Has Potential To Benefit Americans

American citizens will soon be expecting a new kind of alert system.

Emergency text messages from President Donald Trump will be administered to all phones as a part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The mission of FEMA is to “support the citizens and first responders to promote that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards,” according to the Department of Energy and Environment’s website.

Beginning on Oct. 3, with the header stating “Presidential Alert,” and the message “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed,” will be sent, according to CNN. This message was intended to be delivered on Thursday, Sept. 20, but was postponed by spokesperson Mark Peterson and moved to its permanent date in October.

Though the idea of receiving even more texts may be unwanted or seem annoying, the new system being put in place could have the ability to not only help Americans, but in the event of a catastrophe, even save their lives.

Though the Oct. 3 instance will simply be a test, it could easily be implemented in the case of an emergency.

With the recent events and destruction of Hurricane Florence on the Carolinas, the emergency message could be used to warn citizens in the eye of the storm in of evacuation orders or procedures.

People get consumed by their lives with work, family and other personal obligations, so paying attention to a storm, although potentially catastrophic, is not always on the forefront of people’s minds.

Therefore, having this information right on hand is far more convenient than receiving alerts on your television or radio. It is reminiscent of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “fireside chats,” except at your fingertips.“

Now, those people who are restricted with time don’t have to worry about sitting down to catch the news or worry about being in their car to hear the update.

Although the new alert system will greatly impact the nation, the change to cellphones has become political.

Those who are opposed to Trump do not have the option to opt out of receiving the alerts, which may upset some people. Not everyone may feel the notifications are necessary and might not have the most positive reaction.

Regardless, Trump supporter or not, the alerts will be sent to every cell phone.

With the storms circling around the sea, who knows how many alerts will be sent out. Either way citizens safety and knowledge of their surrounding dangers will be confronted.
