I was disappointed when the Central Recorder failed to report on the Men’s Cross Country team WINNING THE 2009 NORTHEAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP. I didn’t write at the time, because that meet fell around the paper’s mid-term hiatus, and I understand that students have other things to. However, after reading Christopher Boulay’s column “Fall Semester Brought Mixed Bag for CCSU Athletics” I could no longer contain myself.
While the article made mention of Coach Kawecki’s strange and unfortunate law suit, it made NO mention of the XC team’s feat. This team was preseason picked to finish 7th out of 12 schools, but dominated at the conference meet, winning its first ever NEC Championship. Coach Eric Blake, in his first year, was awarded coach of the year honors.
While I wouldn’t condone what Coach Kawecki is alleged to have done (if he really did it), all of the runners on the team were recruited under his tenure and he absolutely deserves some credit for building the team that won the championship.
The coaching staff and team deserve better…
